Well its getting that time of year again and I'm starting to put a list together for santa.
I think this year I want books on fly tying. So what are some must have books? Ive only been tying for about a year but I don't realy consider myself a beginner(THANKS TO THE CLASSES AT HRO) so i don't need any beginner type books. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Fly tying books
If I had to choice between books..
top of the list...
The Benchside Reference ... I dont care if you had tyed for 10years.. there is something in that book for you...
The benchside reference is the consensus best book to have. My other two favorites are "Essential Trout Flies" by Dave Hughes, and "Production Fly Tying" by A. K. Best. For tying streamers, anything by Kelly Galloup, written or on video is excellent.

Re: Fly tying books
Designing Trout Flies by Gary Borger is great. There are a ton of good ideas in there.
John Barr's new book is great.
Tying Small Flies is a good book for ideas for small flies.
These are some other ones that were not mentioned.

The guys insane don't you think? I mean its cool, but you gotta be a little nutty to go to those lengths to match the hatch of midge pupae.
Are you looking more for a book on techniques or patterns? Some tying books I really like other than the ones already mentioned (excellent choices, by the way) include: Clouser's Flies, Trout Flies/ Essential Trout Flies/Wet Flies- all 3 by Dave Hughes, Trout Flies by Gary LaFontaine, Creative Fly Tying by Mike Mercer, A New Generation of Trout Flies by Scott Sanchez, Tying Nymphs by Randall Kaufmann, Upper Midwest Flies That Catch Trout by Ross Mueller, and Tying & Fishing Soft-Hackled Nymphs by Allen McGee. Many other books have sections that include some good fly tying patterns and advice too. In addition to the Benchside Reference, Schollmeyer & Leeson also teamed up to write 2 other excellent tying books- Tying Emergers, and also Nymph Fly Tying Techniques. There are also a ton of tying DVD's on the market, some of which are quite good, some of which are not.
