Not happy with my current options, what do you suggest- Black Stoneflies
How is it going everyone? After fishing the muskie today, and witnessing the closest thing I've seen to a blizzard hatch on that river, I was not exactly confident with the patterns I possessed in regards to
1. stonefly nymph *I have large patterns, some double beaded, some big rubber legged ones, but I'm looking for small, slimmer profiled bodies
2. stonefly adult- I don't have a single confidence pattern in this category. they seemed to be 1" to 2" in length. what patterns would you recommend?

Black Elk Hair Caddis, sometimes with a poly wing or rabbits foot wing. I leave off hackle, I want it in film. Trude style with black poly wing, sometimes with rubber tails, antennas. On the Bitteroot fish at times key on the small stones and I trail one off the bigger Skwala stone. Some like to fish a small Stimulator.

Ask Brandon to show you some of his older Stone Fly nymph patterns. I think they may be what you are looking for.

I tie most of mine from a size 6 all the way to a 12. The 10's and 12's I tie with a slimmer body, and I've even seen some 2's and 4's in some people's boxes. Brandon and I have a friend who have some that resemble raccoon turds, no kidding. No harm in trying to mix them up.

Hi,
When the black stone flies are being taken where I live, this fly has worked very well. It can be tied with a thinner abdomen by adding small amounts of dubbing to the tying thread and building it gradually. I usually tie it on a size 14 for our local stoneflies, but I'm sure a size 12 would do as well. I've actually fished the same fly on lighter, similar shaped dry fly hooks , treated with a floatant, in the surface film with good results.

I thank everyone for the responses. that flymph definitely looks intriguing. I'll tie a few up, and we'll see what happens.
