steelhead fishing lake ontario tributaries
Hello! My name is Scott and I am new to this forum I will be traveling to Niagra Falls area in early October from my home waters of Michigan to chase steelhead in a yet to be named river. I am fairly new to the steelhead game and I was hoping to get some good info on catching these bad boys! Any special rigs or flys? How about license fees? If any one could use a little guidence on Mi. waters, Id be happy to share what I know! Thanks.

Hi Scott. Here's the link for the licenses:
http://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6091.html
Fee is going up next year to $70 for an annual license!! Holy cow!!
Anyway, if you can go anywhere, I'd go to the Salmon River Pulaski. October is still a bit early for Steelhead, but they will be there. November into Decemeber is best from what I have seen. There's a bunch of posts on this forum about this river.
Re: steelhead fishing lake ontario tributaries
Scott I think you should pick up th book "Steelhead Dreams" By Matt Supinkski. He talks about Great lake tributaries, gear flies and techniques.
Re: steelhead fishing lake ontario tributaries
All right guys! thank you for the info. I wili be following up on those leads asap. There is nothing I like better then traveling to a new place to fish. I have tried steelheading here in Mi, but so far except for a few junior leaugers, not much luck. Thats okay because fishing boils my blood so I will stick with it and see what happens. As for the guide, I wont have the cash this time around but I know that is the best way to learn lessons that you can keep for a life time. Yellowdog flyfishing out of Bozeman, Mt taght us how to fish the Missouri River a few years ago. One day with them and I had the best fishing of my life for a whole week and their techniques work just as well on the Ausable! If anyone is heading to the Big Sky, I would highly recomend them. Again, thanks for the info, if I can help anyone about fishing Mi, drop me a line. Im looking forward to fishing the great state of New York!

Hey Aaron, I caught your Czech nymphing show on the "askaboutflyfishing.com" archive section and learned about your website from that. Great idea with a wealth of information. I have tried and done well with multiple nymph rigs this summer. As for steelheads , my biggest question is leaders. I have heard everything from 3 ft 20 lb connected to 3 ft 8 lb fluro with loop to loop and slip sinkers to 8ft 8 lb connected to 6lb tippet with a swivel , split shot on the tag of the swivel. Can anyone clear this up with an effective set up? Are there different rigs for streamers then eggs or nymphs? I am assuming I am trying to present a natural drift and that makes me think longer leader...?
