West Branch Delaware River 8/16/2008
I learned a long time ago not to compare my fishing success to Aaron's! Boy was that evident today! Just four days after Aaron's epic trip, BLACKGHOST1 and I made the trip up for the day.
Our total tally was two (2) fish landed. I also hooked and lost a nice rainbow Euro nymphing. We fished from Deposit down to Hale Eddy and did a lot of walking. We fished about 9 hours.
The green "crud" or "grass" was UNBEARABLE. It was really vexing and made for an EXASPERATING day! I can't take it anymore! Short of fishing dry flies, I could not figure out a way to avoid it. Basically, every other cast requires cleaning your flies, your weights, your line, your rod, your hands. There is a TON of suspended green matter in the water.
The flow was raised to 750 from 450 yesterday and was steady around 700 today.
Water temperatures ranged from 42deg in Stilesville to 48 in Hale Eddy. Air temperature when we started was the mid 50s.
There were good hatches today! Moderate olives in size 18, sulfurs in size 18, Yellow Drakes (I think) in size 12 and midges. The sulfur hatch was modest in intensity for about an hour, enough so that there was one dun about every 10ft on the water. Many nice fish were rising during this hatch.
I tried many different nymphs and methods. The fish of the day and ONLY fish for me took a size 20 mayfly imitation fished under a yarn indicator. I don't mind posting the grip and grin, since there is only one!
