Re: Glo Bugs, tying with yarn, and Troutbeads
Salmon pink produced for me today on the Farmington, including this one:

I landed about 5 more, and hooked a monster that I couldn't land. You know better than me, is this a spawned out female? I saw a few fish in the side channels, but no visible redds. I walked around and explored a lot. Not quite Aaron's productivity on the Little Red, but for me an excellent day.

Thank you all for your tips and advice! You're the best.

Re: Glo Bugs, tying with yarn, and Troutbeads
Nice flies. I fished the beads "bare" on my tippet, an inch above a bare size 10 glo-bug hook. I spent a lot of time rigging and re-rigging.
Re: Glo Bugs, tying with yarn, and Troutbeads
Eddie, be careful with those. We found they lead to a lot of swallowed hooks. When the bead is fished above the bare hook on tipped we get a clean, good hook every time. It is a pain but we found it safer for the fish. A lot of people moan about the bare hook but we really found it the safest method for the fish.
Re: Glo Bugs, tying with yarn, and Troutbeads
Point taken - hopefully not too deep.
Have you tried a thin z-lon veil? That way the fly might get hung up on the roof of their mouth.
Either way, I dont think they'll be swallowing the clusters too easily.
Re: Glo Bugs, tying with yarn, and Troutbeads
I fish them both with a bare hook under the bead approx. 2 inches below. Also, fish it with a nymph dropper which works well. It's like fishing a two nymph rig without a hook on one. I started out last year tying them on hooks and I did ok. Still have a lot. However, I personally believe that when the bead is pegged or tied using the Troutbeads Knot, the bead drifts and behaves more naturally in the water. Plus, I have caught a lot more fish this year on them without them being tied to the hook. Plus, Juice is right. I have read info on how fish take eggs and they do inhale them. I have had some fish take it deep in there mouth but thankfully not too deep.
Re: Glo Bugs, tying with yarn, and Troutbeads
Even on the bare hook, 1.5-2 inches above the hook, a few of my fish took it deep. I guess they are so keyed in to the spawn, it's just how it works out. I'm not sure I like the Trout Beads knot, since part of the tippet is outside the bead and could easily rub on the trout teeth. In any case, I can't wait to get out and try these again, I think they may have completely changed by approach to Fall fishing for trout. We are getting a warming trend mid-week, so I will probably try to go after work one day then.

Alain-
That does look like a spawned out female to me- look at the loose, concave belly.
Re: Glo Bugs, tying with yarn, and Troutbeads
In alaska, my father and I told the guide we didn't want to fish with the beads after half a day because of the deep hooking. The fish there are so aggressive after the eggs that it was really difficult to keep the hooks out of the throat and gut. Obviously most fish were hooked in the mouth, but going from barbless, easy releases with zero mortality to losing several fish in half a day was unacceptable. Especially since we were in a park where it was illegal to harvest bows, so we had to just let em go. I've always had an aversion to egg patterns ever since, except if its for stupid NJ stocked trout. Feck em. They think its powerbait anyway.
