What do you do when a trout won't commit?

40 min from the WB and don't streamer fish. HOLY CRAP are you in for some fun. You've been neglected..lol

What a great day. I fished a run on a stream I haven't fished in quite some time. It's about 100 yards long and normally we would pull out 4-5 fish is a normal day. Today I fished up stream techniques and landed around 20. I then switched to a streamer ( using the same leader set up) and worked my way back down the same run and pulled out 4 more!!! Biggest was about 16 inches most were in the 10-12 inch range, with a couple of wild bows in the mix. I'm really liking this versatile fishing set up!!

I've been doing that as well Frank - fishing back down through the same water with big streamers. Its amazing how many fish you'll pull out of the same stretch that had no desire in your nymphs. Wingnut had an epic day doing that on the Willow recently.

Does anybody tie Galloup style articulated streamers in smaller sizer? Instead of a peanut envy with a size 2 trailed by a size 6, do you downsize to like a 8 trailed by a 10? Seems to me like it would work and it is something I am going to try. Just seeing if anyone else has tried this out.

Yes I do and sometimes the smaller ones catch the largest fish! Look up a fly called the "Rattlesnake." It's very similar to what you are asking about. I really like that fly. I hammered them on the Madison two falls ago with it! They didn't go for the big junk so I scaled it down a bit and it got the job done :)

I know its not directly related, but if you look in last month's Field and Stream, there is an article talking about big baits making their way into the bass circuit. We're talking 12-16" plastics that resemble snakes or eels. Going to chuck articulated for smallies in a couple weeks.

big baits have been a staple on the bass scene for quite some time. I'm sure Kelly Galloup and his tier's dungeon *all the people who actually come up with the patterns, lol* picked up on those in the early to mid 90's when those giant trout sized swim baits made the scene.

I fished those for a while, they weighed a LOT, but they caught some monsters for me in some reservoirs.

Its funny sometimes really big stuff works...like in post runoff periods or after a rain. Other times(summer at dawn specifically) I like a smallish grey ghost, or Gartside soft hackle streamer...maybe in a 10. All summer long I do a fair amount of streamer fishing on the hard hit waters and do pretty well if I am not up to dealing with a super technical setup. Its a nice breather from that kind of fishing.

Hey guys I am curious..if I really need to get fish(which I never do but really want to) I throw streamers regardless of the situation. Do and of the competition guys streamer fish or is it illegal or something. I would think in some situations it would really payoff.

They definately streamer fish. They nymph, throw dries, streamers, wets too!
