What size Iso nymphs should I carry?

I usually use a #12 on a 3xl hook for the nymph, but they can be effective both bigger & smaller. They tend to be bigger earlier in the season, and a bit smaller as the season progresses and you get into the Fall. I've seen them as big as a #8 in June on the Housatonic, maybe even a #6! People often think they are a Green Drake 'cuz they are so damn big. In the Fall, I've seen them down to a #14 on the Farmington.

For the dries, try a #12 2xl dry fly hook like the Tiemco 5212 (gives you the equivalent of a #10 in length, but the smaller wire diameter & hook bend of a #12 so it floats better). And again, depending on the time of year & the place, you may want them smaller or even bigger. The 5212 is great for tying hoppers & bigger mayflies such as Iso's, March Browns, Brown Drakes, Green Drakes & Hex's. Remember, it's 2x long so pick a hook a size smaller than you would use in a standard length hook to give you the correct length fly.
