Re: Your Choice of Hooks and why?
I have the magic tool it works great and probably not only lets you tie more kinds of flies with cdc..but you also waste less so i bet after a couple hundred flies you are probably ahead of the game. i really like it...but...you need to have fairly long cdc fibers to really take advantage of it. the stuff sold by petitjean or harrop's trout hunter is really good for use with the magic tool.
Re: Your Choice of Hooks and why?
I use the cheapest CDC for my nymphs. The kind that comes in one once packs for twelve bucks. These are all small feathers but they work ok for nymphs. I use a piece of bright sized ultra wire to press them through the plastic jig. I trim the fibers even shorter and grab them with the plastic clip.

Bill,
Are you coming to the Tying Symposium? I will be looking forward to seeing you there. We can talk about the hooks till our hearts are content. I would like to meet anyone who is there from TPO. Please stop by and introduce yourself.

I would like to go where and when is it
Re: Your Choice of Hooks and why?
Hi.
First, let me say I tie a lot more wets than dries. I use Mustad hooks and find them good. I also use Daiichi and Grip hooks as well, very few Tiemco. My hook selection is based upon the profile of fly I'm creating and the fishing I'm doing. I think of fly tying as "sculpture" and to me, the hook is the "armature" or base for the fly. So I look at the natural I'm trying to imitate, then perhaps what stage I'm imitating as well. Then I select a hook that will suit the application. For example, some up eye hooks might work better for flies which are allowed to sink then fished to the surface as an emerging fly.
Also variation of hook weight is important. For example, I might tie some wingless wets on dry fly hooks to present upstream, yet tie the same pattern on heavy hooks to get them to sink deep.
So, hook selection for me is based upon many things and manufacturer is selected, often based on the hook's characteristics rather than brand.

Re: Your Choice of Hooks and why?
Hello
When we met Aaron was interested by the hooks I use.
I use to buy some Devaux hooks. Barbless of course. Very good for dry fly. Very sharpe!
For nymph I use the caddis ones. They don't exist barbless, unfortunatly. But they're very good!

This is a french site. I don't think they can ship to USA. But I'm sure you can find those hooks there, or in Canada.
Devaux is a famous angler, so I think his material is available in North America.
