I live in Brewster 3 miles from "bathtub pool" on the EB Croton river and fish croton water system up and down...lower Amawalk and West Branch Reservoir outlet (ie; the middle section of the west branch croton river) have the two of the best wild trout populations in close proximity to NYC...both are all wild browns..with amawalk coming across the occassional wild brookie and west branch i've caught personally 3 wild landlocked salmon there this year..they're both sick places to fish and about 1:30 minutes southeast of the catskills... "west branch reservoir to croton falls reservoir" is the section i'm talking about in the link (scroll up a bit when you click it) http://books.google.com/books?id=fyC...0trout&f=false

Re: St. Croix rods
I have a decent arsenal of rods and have had the privilege of throwing many rods, including many high end rods. I recently bought a St Croix Legend Ultra 8' 4wt. What a great, and I do mean great rod. The action is med-fast, has a nice flat finish and single foot guides. The St Croix line up tubes are self divided instead of having a rod sock. The warranty is wonderful with St Croix. If the rod is damaged due to defect you send the rod with $20. If you are not the registered owner (buy it used), break it in the door, etc then it is $50. The cool thing is if you break your lower end St Croix and want to upgrade to a newer or better model they will credit you the MSRP of your old rod against a new one. Pretty cool, especially if you didn't buy the top end rod.
Anyway, the St Croix Legand Ultra is awesome. There is some interesting technology in their Ultra and Elite blanks i.e. the Loomis NRX technology they are crowing about. I received a 9' 4wt Ultra today and tried it out on the lawn and imagine it will quickly become my favorite rod, over my Winston BIIMX, WT and BIIx's.

Re: St. Croix rods
I'll also add that I have a friend who traded in a 9' 4wt Sage TCX for a 9' 4wt St Croix Legand Elite.

Re: St. Croix rods
You like the ultra huh? I was checkin' those out on their website to get a new 9 footer. I have an Imperial 7' 3wt (I said 2wt in a previous post and it was in error)that I just returned to the co. cause I broke the tip off. So you would recommend the St. Croix over the Sage? Maybe I'll get 1 of those then!

Re: St. Croix rods
Absolutely. If you want a faster rod, the Elite is quite fast with a great feel.

Re: St. Croix rods
I think that the St. Croix rods are overall, a little bit more affordable than some of the rods that would be comparable from other companies such as Sage, Orvis, etc. and that's why I went w/ them last year when I was lookin for more quality than Walmart stuff. However, I'll let you know how my experience turns out w/ the returned rod thing. Just got off the phone w/ a guy from St. Croix and he's not sure where my rod is that I returned!! Gonna call me back. That would majorly piss me off since I know they received it based on the tracking # and the fact that they already cashed my 50$ check!!

Re: St. Croix rods
No worries, guy called back and they have my rod and are replacing the tip. Wanted to update that earlier post cause didn't want to hurt St. Croix's rep needlessly.

Re: St. Croix rods
Several years ago I lent an older model St Croix to a friend. This was a back-up rod for me in good used condition. He broke it while fishing for mud sharks (aka chinook salmon) on the Salmon River. I returned it for repair I received a nice new rod as a replacement. Their service was top notch.
