Re: Leader/Tippet Formulas for Trout
you can try that.
the page is in french but you 've got some conversion in anglo saxon system.
at the end of the page click on "calcul", you'll find a file which can calculate your formula depending of your rod lenght and the leader lenght that you want... easy and efficient.

Re: Leader/Tippet Formulas for Trout
After doing a little research (looking at the kit on the shelf) the Umpqua is nylon, so that's out.
What I plan to do is buy some 15 lb + 20 lb clear Amnesia mono for the butt section, and then taper it down as Sherpa suggested..
2x to 4x perhaps.. and then a 5x/6x tippet (I'm using a 5wt rod, so 6x might be too light)
Here's a question.. and forgive me on my ignorance, but why spend the extra money on 6x tippet material in 110yd spools (fluoroflex, for instance), when you can save some money and buy a big spool of quality (Seaguar/PLine) 100% fluoro in 2lb test?
Thanks,
-Drew

No reason if the comparison is apples to apples. Let compare break strength vs diameter for Seaguar vs Flouroflex.
For Seaguar Blue Label 2 lb test FC I get a diameter of 6.4 X or .0046"
For Rio Flouroflex Plus 7X at .0040" I get 2.5 lb strength.
The difference seems small but you get 25% more strength at a 15% thinner diameter with the Rio Flouroflex.
Go to 6X Flouroflex at 3.6 lb strength and you get 80% stronger tippet that is only 6.6% thicker. A small difference in diameter for almost twice the breaking strength.
Since the amount of material varies with the square of the diameter (length being a constant), the Flouroflex material is actually 65% stronger than the material in the Seaguar. 65% is a huge difference and that is what you are paying for.
Now that is only on breaking strength alone. You also need to feel the material to check for suppleness and check for abrasion resistance.
