ok so correct me if im wrong but you guys are using regular mono/flouro,,,not tippet material correct? I wish i would have waited a day longer to go to cabellas,,lol

i just use 2-3 pound berkly or spider line. very low memory, pretty strong, and the same price to get 250 yards of berkly as to get 100 yards of expencive tippet material(10$-15$).

Also for normal alngling there is vicious fishing line which works amazing.

I was out this past week and for the first time really tried the polish nymphing thing. I now see the way it works more clearly , I have a question about leader design tho. I'm using a piece of 8lb stren about a foot long for visibility to that I tie my 6 foot piece of 6lb P line flouro. I tried using tippet for my dropper ( i was only using 2 nymphs an anchor and 1 dropper) and now I see what you guys are talking about of finding a stiffer mono for the dropper. I tried using the P line for the dropper and it was better but that is not going to fit through all the eyes of the smaller nymphs. so my question is what do you guys use for your stiffer dropper material to avoid the droppers twisting around the main leader.

My suggestion would be to shorten the P line section and just add some tippet to that. Add more tippet to the first piece and use the tag end of that knot to tie on your first fly. Put your heavier fly off the bottom piece of tippet. That way if you use smaller diameter on both pieces of tippet you shouldn't have a problem threading your flies onto the line. I wouldn't go smaller than 6x though, I'd try to stick with 5x if you can get away with it. If you tie your own flies you can get hooks sizes 16-22 on 5 and 6x tippet no problem if you're really cognizant of not clogging the eyelets when finishing the flies.

oooh ok,,,so you dont recommend Vladi's method of using the double perfection loops for your droppers so they can spin around the main section of leader ? To be honest it didn't seem to work real well as every 2 or 3 casts involved untwisting the 2 lines, but when i watched the Vladi dvd I didn't see him do this one time,,welcome to the wonderfull world of video editing I guess,,Lol

I've never seen the DVD but that sounds like a lot of work for a rather simple fix. Davy also suggested at some point on this site to just tie on a piece of tippet perpendicular to your main leader just above the knots once the excess tag from the surgeon's loop knot is too short. Just use the Figure 8/Davy Knot to tie the tippet to the leader (search Davy Knot on the site for directions on how to tie it, very simple). That way you can ensure it's the right diameter tippet to go with your flies and not waste time revamping your leader to suit your flies. I've used that method before and it works great, and I haven't had any problems with breaking off from either at the main leader or the smaller piece of tippet.

Also, as far as the twisting goes, it does happen from time to time off the smaller piece off the leader. However, the water current seems to take care of it 95% of the time just by casting it back into the river. In my previous post I didn't specify what knot to use, I think the double perfection loop and surgeon's loop may be the same, some one correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't think that Vladi worries about it twisting. I don't think that there is any real way that you can stop it from happening. I do think that once the flies are in the water they unravel and are presented just fine. The only thing that you constantly need to be on the lookout for are knots. When fishing the clients I have untangled many a knot in the dropper tag. So my advice would be not to worry much about the twisting, but check your set up periodically for knots.

ok so let me know if I have this correct, foot or so of stren 8Lb - blood knot- 4' 6lb p line floro -blood knot - 24" 5x tippet - anchor fly. Then above the tippet knot tie in about an 8" dropper with a double perfection loop or Davy knot. My only concern about the twisting was I was allways told that if your mono twists it weakens it but im not really sure if that is the case here. Aaron how do you feel about Vladis perfection loop dropper connection ? IMO and I could totally be off base but I feel like if you hooked a strong enough that he could maybe pull the dropper and make it slide over the knot. Given Murphys law I may feel better with the way troutastic was saying leaving the tag end as the dropper.

My droppers tend to be a little shorter than you say. More like 5-6, but that may be me.

I would not use it for the same reaon that you mentioned.

More knots equals more possible problems! Especially if they are in one place.
