smash grabs generally set the hook themselves ,it is the ones that come at the end of the drift ,davy your slack line technique gives the line slack time to let the line pull the fly into the corner of their mouth ,given that trout are easier to set the hook on then salmon and i think that might be due to fish behavior . ive had them (trout ) grab my tube flys and run ive tested this if you pull to quick you miss ,give it a second and bam your on . Steelhead on the otherhand (hatcery fish especially ) like to grab the fly and mouth it you have to let them turn before setting the hook .
Your style of wet fly fishing is much different to as well davy your not really swinging a wet you are almost floating or dabbing or might i say both !
