... Or driving to the Hammonassett to fish... I caught two, both stockies.
Next week Aaron, next week!
nutman: just so we are clear, I'll add a few words. Cleaning a clump of deer hair has everything to do with removing the underfur, not the guard hairs. If not removed, the underfur will foul the thread during the spinning and lock the fibers down before they spin. The razor blades are just the plain old straight blades available at drug stores.
The best deer hair is called a "Premo" strip, and is about 15 by 3 inches and costs about $10. You should look for a strip that has straight fibers that have a coarse or kinked fiber. The coarseness adds to the bulk for pushing water and the straight fibers are just plain easier to spin. The straight fibers also make it a lot easier to tie in a collar. As I've said, I learned all this from Kelly Galloup's video and highly recommend that.
hmm I know ,to just get the short under hairs out ,the comb helps but fingers work better ! If you are an oldschool spinner , I was taught by my father ,who has a bass bug collection like no other ive seen to this day You never spin with buck tail ! only body hair ,because it is hollow ! You dont need ten dallor patches ,for goodness sake they were designed to catch bass . Good dyed belly hair or body hair of a deer works fine ! I guess if you want to get a super duper bass bug you could spend ten bucks . This prosess uses alot of hair so i go as cheap as possible .
the razor im speaking of bends inbetween your fingers ,they are very thin ,not always easy to find ,drug dealers always wore them off chains in movies . anyway you might find them at the drug store .Also electric beard trimmers are helpful .
stacking it tight is the uttmost important ,then make the bottom of the fly flat ,it is important to cut them nice and flat ,so they sit nicely on the water .Alot of these designes are used here for skater flies on the deschutes . Which is making me want to get a hold of my dads bass bug box !
nutman: Your Dad's bass bugs sound great. If you do get a hold of that box, we can post some pictures if you like, thanks.
that box is worth alot of money ,it not only has bass bugs but poppers as well ,ive wanted to make a display case for them .just havent put my mind to it . He use to use them in the sixties at night for bass .he claims there was one made of peacock feathers ,that was a moth .He said it use to just slam the big boys .
I know this much ive used them on all kind of bass ,back when I started fly fishing and i caught lots of bass ! They slam the buggers .I never had much luck with the poppers . If i get to make the display case one of these days ill show off the patterns .My father was offered a thousand dallors back in the sixties ,the cash was laid down in front of him .He refused . So they are special flys and they made me start tying years ago .
Just looking at them use to make my imagination run wild .
I found the winter Fly Tyer magazine today and it also has a lot of good tips for deer hair.
