Attractor dries- choosing the size

Fishing the fast water on both the farmington and the housy with big attractor flies can be a deadly tactic, especially in the middle of a dead of summer day when nothing else is happening.

big Stimmies and a Royal PMX are go to flies for me when nothing is hatching and I dont feel like nymphing. I also like a black foam caddis pitched to the edges of fast flowing streams...always seems to pull up a couple fish. When fishing the Stimulators I go by the lafontain color theory and it seems to work pretty well.

I bounce back in forth between a yellow humpy and the adams wulff. I also just added a new pattern to my box thats supposedly a killer brookie pattern. I will have to wait and see how it works.

My fav For Attractor Fly would Have To Be a H&L Variant I Tie them Mostsly Between Size 12 through 16.. Theres A time and place for every size, I wouldnt be scared to go big in slow current though. Another Fav of Mine is A Wulf Adams, I have used this fly not only As an Attractor But Option Two On A Henndrickson Hatch When Fish Are selective

Interesting responses. When I decide to search the water it is usually with a rather large wet fly rather than dry. In this case I like Lead-wing Coachman in size 10, but my Genesee Jewel (photo below) also works great in size 10 on my water.

When I do search using a dry fly I prefer an Ausable Wulff. The version I tie is according to the originator of the fly, Fran Betters. I have never seen it offered in any catalog or fly shop-except Fran's-where it is tied in the correct color or using the correct materials. It works great on my home river as well as the Ausable.

Stimulators and Foam Terrestrials.

I have a magical pattern that comes from Utah called The Mutant. If you can find any info about it, you'll know more about it then I do.

What I do know is that I got it in a box of random flies that I ordered from the internet and the next week I called back and ordered their entire stock.

It doesn't always produce fish...but it has never failed to produce a rise. It is a true searcher pattern. I've caught fish on it, but it is SO large that only the biggest fish get the hook.

I don't claim to be an expert on trout theories, but I like to think that it is too big and too buggy for a trout NOT to take a swipe at.

When the day is slow and I start to wonder if there are any fish in the area I am casting to, I put this fly on, and I get my answer.

Lately I've been tying stimulators in the same colors and it seems to work incredibly well just before dark.

Matt sure sounds like you are matching the hatch to me. :o Once the big flys start hatching, often sporadically for long periods... big flys are squarely on the menu.

Try fishing that big busy fly in September on the Delaware system when the size 24 BWOs are hatching in the No Kill. Not saying you won't hook up but you will hook up more often fishing the bug and stage they are eating.

I have a good pattern for Attractors/Stimi's Parachute Madam-X...(Tmc 5212 Size 10)You can tie them Golden or all Peacock.. There a little Tough to tie but there well worth it.They FLoat so well you can fish then in fast water, long as you have some good line control... I guess you can tie your black stones this way too , just smaller..This fly is very Dependable late in the season..
