Re: Czech or Polish Nymphing
I've been working hard on boosting my level of strike detection. I've said this before: this is a game of strike detection and reaction to it. I am working beyond rigging...and I am setting the hooks at times, as a friend likes to say "when a fish farts near the fly." Stillwater and river systems alike.
I learned some things recently in Utah that has rejuvinated my fishing. I am just really lucky to know some devestatingly good anglers.
Re: Czech or Polish Nymphing
Loren, who might they be. ?
Davy.
Re: Czech or Polish Nymphing
Loren-
I know you want to save some new stuff for your nymphing clinic this Fall, but are you just gonna tease us, or are you gonna share some details?
Re: Czech or Polish Nymphing
Torrey,
Seriously...strike detection is a function of time on the water and how bad you want to improve. All I can say is that we all get bit far more than we realize.
Davy, Kurt Finlayson is doing some stillwater work that I feel is revolutionary (within my scope of knowledge). Spent a few days with him and he showed me some stuff--well actually he did some stuff long enough for me to get my hands around it as it's all sort of Zen). That time has now melted into advances on rivers. George Daniel has been a long time source of credit--heck all the guys I compete with an against offer opportunities to learn. You know how it goes.
Re: Czech or Polish Nymphing
Loren,
That is exactly right. It is time spent on the water with the fundamental knowledge of what you are doing and why, there is no other substitute for it.
What for many is the issue of understanding basic elements of skill, before moving on the the more advanced techniques. If you do not have a thorough understanding of the basics problems will arise.
The best fly fishers l have ever known are all very positive in approach to a given situation, guess work is not the game here, bottom line it amounts to years of experience, and knowing the options of choice to use given the prevailing conditions. In other words a systematic approach.
If Kurt, by the way a member of the US team.
John Wilson has asked of me if l would be interested to coach again the Youth team, how to fish UK stillwaters, as next year they are in Scotland fishing lakes l know real well. Fact, got my first gold medal fishing Leven.
I believe he has talked with George about this.
Not sure where we are with this rigth now.
Tigh lines, Davy.
Re: Czech or Polish Nymphing
Davy,
Kurt is indeed heavily involved with Team USA.
I sure hope you can help the Youth Team. I will remain on the coaching staff--to what capacity will be dictated heavily by if I get selected to the adult WFFC in Scotland. I love working with the kids and we can certainly use all the experienced help we can get. But for now I owe myself and my teammates dedication with my own training. John dedicated an immense amount of time and money the the kids--I'm not sure I can match what he's done in the past. But I will always be available to help in some capacity.
Not sure if you know that we have restructured the youth team to be separate from the adult team with its own BOD and 501c(3) (in progress). Hopefully it's a positive move.
Re: Czech or Polish Nymphing
Loren,
Not sure of you were aware or not but l was the Youth team international coach for the first two years, we won gold and silver medals at that time
Due to circumstances that arose l chose not to continue, it had nothing to do with the youth team members.
Pleased to see that there is a BOD and you have 501c 3 status, that should help to obtain further funding.
At any rate we will see what transpires here for the future.
Davy

Bumping up this comprehensive discussion.
Re: Czech or Polish Nymphing
I am new to fly fishing so plz excuse my ignorance, but could someone link me to a pic or vid that show what these czech and Polish rigs look like and/or how to set them up?
Re: Czech or Polish Nymphing
Wow - there is no short answer to this one. First and foremost, I would go back to the beginning of this thread and read it completely. It's very lengthy, but that's just an indication of how much info is on that thread. It's possible there is not more poignant info on this one thread on euro-nymphing than anywhere else on the web. I'm quite certain you'll find most of your questions answered there.
In addition, you may want to scoll through the topics in the nymphing forum on this site for even more info.
You can also check this site out:

Read through many of the articles there too.
Have fun with it - it's a blast.
