Winter Tying Tip: Hand Care
Just a quick tip. If you're like me, the skin on my hands tends to dry out in the winter, making tying flies harder than it should be. Here's a few tips:
- Hand lotion. Sally Hansen 18 Protective Hand Cream (orange bottle). Expensive, but works the best for me. You can never apply it too often.
- Emery board. It's possible to smooth your finger tips with filing. It works!
- Hot water. Right before tying, give your hands a really hot soak with plain water. Even after drying them off, some moisture remains and that helps with most tying.
- Wash your hands. When you're done tying, wash 'em up good. Everything we use contains harmful chemicals and most of them dry your skin.
Hope this is helpful. I am tying a lot right now, perhaps so are you.

there's a joke or 3 in here somewhere.... tis the season to keep it clean.
Re: Winter Tying Tip: Hand Care
Those are all great tips, thanks Alain. On a related topic, for the winter fishing this year, I usually apply moisture cream to my hands, and entire face and ears. This keeps the skin softer to reduce severe cracking, and the thickness of the cream really creates a thick "hyper-dermal" layer that fights against those strong brisk winds . I really do my best to coat the finger tips around the nails and nailbeds.
Re: Winter Tying Tip: Hand Care
I usually apply the cream the night before fishing, and then another coat when I wake up.

Hey Brookie ..
Kinda makes you wonder who has the stock in vasiline ??
Sorry guys.. I read this earlier.. and was going to committ.. but since the ice was broken... somebody had to do it...
All kidding aside..
when use hand lotion .. try a high oil based when on the water.. this will help yoour hand stay dry when you get it wet (like vasiline).. rub it on your hand right before you hit the water.. it will keep the heat on the skin and last long..
Down side.. it make for handling your fly rod better...
