??? Whats up with that? yesterday I left work a little early and fished the mid tma on the housey. I was at a deep pool with flat water on top with a good hatch comming off. I was there from 4:00-6:15 and I didnt even see one fish rise. I know the fish are there. Also I saw a lot of bugs just floating in the film.
It just seemed to be good conditions but no fish rising.(I got the skunk)

Re: No Fish Rising
I just talked to torrey and he said that what I thought was a hatch was prolbrable a what he called a (false caddis hatch)
He told me that at that time of day the caddis were flying up river to land in the trees and lay eggs. This makes good sence as to why the fish wernt rising to them.

Re: No Fish Rising
During periods like that you should go ask Torrey for some of LaFontaine's diving caddis. Might be able to take fish on that pattern because many caddis species dive underwater and swin down to the rocks to go lay their eggs. The trout will often be looking for these divers.

Re: No Fish Rising
Regan... read what he wrote. THE CADDIS DO NOT LAY THEIR EGGS IN THE WATER> THEY FLY UPSTREAM AND LAY THE EGGS ON THE LEAVES. THE CADDIS WERE NEVER AVALILABLE TO THE FISH AS A FOOD ITEM.

Re: No Fish Rising
Aaron, I cannot find any reference to Caddis laying eggs on leaves after flying upstream.
Caddis will fly upstream and stay on overhead leaves to mate, the females will then fly back to the water for egg laying by ovipositing, diving or crawling.
I believe there is a misunderstanding of what Torrey stated.
Red faced follow-up, I found a large group that will lay eggs on overhanging leaves or the ground,,, rain will transport the eggs to the water for larval development.
I should know better than to doubt the Nymphmeister.
Regards again,
FK

Re: No Fish Rising
:( if they're waiting for a rain, they could be in for a long wait....
i wonder how long the eggs can remain viable without an aquatic environment? i wonder if this drought will affect caddis number on Ct rivers next year?-paul

Re: No Fish Rising
Torrey- How do you know the difference between the leaf egg-laying variety of caddis and caddis that dive under?

Haha John, that was really funny! Actually as far as species of caddis that do this the brown ones in the fall are the only ones that I knew of. I also remember having the same experience many years ago. There were millions of caddis flying up river and no trout rose at all... it was our own nymphmeister that explained this to me as well.
