Reverse counter-shading = high visibility
Centuries ago, a naturalist /artist observed that animals camoflauge themselves by counter-shading. A deer his darkest on the back graduating to white hair on its belly. Minnows have a white belly/ black back. have you fished streamers where you flip the countershading to white back/ black belly? If yes, did you catch fish? In theory such a streamer would be more visible to a predator and might make it appear more vulnerable.
Re: Reverse counter-shading = high visibility
Weird: I was just thinking about the same thing last night as I was tying up some golden stone nymphs with the usual light belly, dark top. Stands to reason that an upside-down insect would look more vulnerable and thus trigger a stronger response. This might be even more true of an upside-down baitfish (anyone ever seen a dead or dying fish float right-side-up?). As with all aspects of fly-tying, someone has probably already written a book about this...
Re: Reverse counter-shading = high visibility
nhowe,
It is an interesting question and well worth a try i guess it would just depend on the forage/baitfish in your rivers. I have seen upside down dying baitfish but more often then not i have seen other trout eat other trout and baitfish when they are on the run. I think they really like a fresh meal, haha but funny storie, ice has been melting around our rivers and when cows go out on the ice to get a drink they fall in and drown, well i have been seeing our native cutthroat trout cleanign the carcas clean ??? almost like carniverous pirhana like trout hahaha.
Re: Reverse counter-shading = high visibility
I believe Herbert Welch has your answer in the timeless effectiveness of his little known pattern "Black Ghost streamer"
That thing will, given the chance catch every Brown in the river. They just can't resist it, kinda like me with a salami sandwich !
Now, whether he thought the counter shading theories through is another matter.
Your topic does give us food for thought (too obvious ?) and now I have to tie more flies only in reverse this time !
It never ends....
