Fly tyer magazine question??
In your most recent write up in fly tyer BTW which was really good! you talk a little about rods and mentioned the sage 99 4wt. Have you used this or know anybody who has?
I'm really interested in this rod and have been for a while. Any info would be most helpful.
Thanks in advance.
Re: Fly tyer magazine question??
The 99 was mentioned in the article because that it the rod that SAGE markets as a nymph rod.
I really didn't like the taper of the rod very much. It does not have much wiggle in the tip section and the middle of the rod wobbles after the cast is made. Have you had one in your hands yet? Make sure that you try it before you fork over the money for one. For a niche rod you really can't beat the Greys rods. The tapers are so well designed and the hardware that was chose was very good. The signle foot guides alone make the rod dampen more quickie due to weight loss due to less material being added to the rod.
Where are you from? Ramsey Outdoor has all of the 10 and 11 foot models, give them a wiggle... You'll like it :)
Re: Fly tyer magazine question??
yes i was fooling around with the 5wt at tightlines. I didn't get that wobble feel to it. I have the 3wt greys 10' I like it but... I feel like its missing some thing during the cast especially when heavier flies are being used. Mind sharing what you prefer?
Re: Fly tyer magazine question??
I like the new 10 foot and 11 foot 4 weights. Everytime I have fished medium streams I have used it, even over my favorite, or ex favorite The Marksman. When you go next time pick up the 11 foot rods and feel how light they feel in your hand. The design and taper of that rod is exceptional. When you put it in your hands you'll agree! Try one and let me know. I'm off to bed there are fish to catch tomorrow!
Re: Fly tyer magazine question??
Thanks!! wow beat out the marksman
Re: Fly tyer magazine question??
I have fished with the Greys 10 ft 3wt for a couple years now and used it exclusively for Euro nymphing. I even used it in the Madison and Big hole and never felt under gunned. This past fall I bought the Greys Streamflex 10 ft 4 wt. It is an amazing rod even better than the 3 wt for fly placement. I just feel more accurate and have less wasted motion. I have caught alot of good size fish on the 3 wt and it is awesome after the hook set. But the 4 wt can do it all.
Re: Fly tyer magazine question??
I have both the Greys 10 ft 4 wt and the Marksman 10ft 4 wt. Love them both but if I had to pick one it would be the Marksman. I think it has a better recovery rate and I love the feel of it. But I have to say for the price it's hard to beat the Greys.
