Z-Axis 4 wt 10' for wet flies?

I have the opportunity to purchase a slightly used Z-Axis 4 wt 10' rod for a great price. Does the 10' Z-Axis have enough mid-flex to be a good wet fly rod?

When I cast it, the 10' Z-Axis did seem to flex a bit more into the mid-section than my 9'.

Putting aside the "great" price, do you feel it makes a good wet fly rod?
I think you said that, but I'm not sure if it was an equivocal yes based on the "great" price or whether it was an unequivocal yes.

There isn't a ten foot rod that I've cast in that line weight that does not flex into the mid section. That extra foot lends itself to more flexibility.

The answer on the Z Axis was a yes and a yes. The rod is very good for fishing wet flies and nymphing. I used to own one.

Hey Aaron....Out of curiosity, what are your preferred rods for each discipline (Dry, indi nymph, euro, wet, streamer)? I know this is a personal preference thing, but you have tried a lot of rods and have given good advice. How many rods do you usually carry to the river when fishing for pleasure?

I would be interested to hear everyone's preference. I currently use a 9' Sage Graphite III 5wt. for dries and a 10' 4wt Hardy Marksman (on Aaron's recommendation) for nymphing.....I will probably add another nymph rod in the future. I usually have both rods with me.

Honestly if you're gonna spend all that money on a rod then I'd do it on one to fish dries or bomb saltwater flies with where the performance makes much more of a difference and has greater value...i'm sure you can get a whole array of rods in the $200-300 range to fish wet/nymphs with where the performance is going to be just about the same and I know they make the TFO Professional in 10ft 5wt for under $200 which is a nice quality rod that'll get the job done which also comes with an awesome warranty and certainly beats dumping $800 or anywhere close to that into a Sage...i'd definitely test out one of those before doing anything else

Simply the main deal for a good wet fly rod is that it has a flexable tip that provides a gentle bend to mid section and may be a little more. My wet fly ways DVD explains this a little more.
In teh case of the TFO 10ft 5 wt l worked with TFO to produce that rod for wet fly fishing, it is a good overall rod for other techniques, but not one l would use for others.
Streamflex 10ft 3 and 4 are also great rods, if it is a wet fly rod you are looking for then go for the 4 as this rod will also well handle intermediate and sink tip lines for you.
The 3 is also good, my river the White is a very large tailwater system and at times a 3wt is not enough rod to deal with 20,000cfs.

Bottom line is there is no perfect rod for all, choose a rod that you know is suited more so to the waters you will fish on a regular basis. The Sage ZA 10ft 4 l also own, overall a great rod but at times just a little to fast for my liking so far as wet and soft hackle techniques.
May well suit for you, l am real fussy about what l choose to use.
