Aaron, I was fishing a small Pa. stream last week and there were black caddis on the water. Fish were leaping out of the water, I think after them. I could not get a take. I tried CDC caddis, soft hackles and pupas to no avail. Can you help with a suggestion on patterns or technique? I am going back tomorrow. Thanks ahead, Jake

Re: caddis question
That's a tough one and we were talking about similar behavior not too long ago. Trout sometimes in low clear water will feed on insects that are not even on the water. You might want to fish for those fish by working a top dropper on a wet fly rig. Partridge and herl should work to imitate the black caddis. In Davy's video he shows how to do this. If you have it give it a view before heading out.

Re: caddis question
Try a heavily hackled fly skated on the surface to simulate a caddis that is dipping into the water. Sometimes that works.
