So I sat down at my vise.......
....and got started. After seeing what some of you guys produce I felt really humbled by what I took off the vise. I am trying to tie nymphs. Actually I believe I am doing very well with the tails and the body, its the thorax (hackle especially) and wing cases that are giving me problems. That and the finishing. I think I should get a whip finishing tool, perhaps that will help. How crappy were your guy's first flies cuz I think I got you all beat,,,lol.
Re: So I sat down at my vise.......
lopat,
you have no clue how crappy my first flies were. My first flies were tied with (no joke) sewing thread, golden lab hair, and hawk feather all on a snell hook locked between a pair of vice grips taped to the kitchen table lol I've come a long way since then lol
About finishing, I think that if you want to whip finish you should learn to do it by hand (just my opinion) I could never get the tool to work for me and just found using my finers simpler and quicker. You can find a bunch of videos on youtube but here's the one I learned from:
POLARIS FLIES - HAND WHIP FINISHING - NEW FLY TYING VIDEOS
What problems are you having with wing cases? Maybe I can help you out
Re: So I sat down at my vise.......
thanks fo rthe vid, its much easier to understand than a 5 step diagram. I am practising on some 87 cent hooks using sewing thread and seagull and goose feathers I found in the parking lot at work. I did order some viable materials but I really don't want to waste them tying the monstrosities that are coming off my vise. I'll get better, just have to put the time in.
Re: So I sat down at my vise.......
My whip finish is now successful......woot woot
Thanks kyle!
