Hey guys, I've started to tye some czech nymphs (not the greatest, but a start) and I see that a lot of people like to use flat lead wire to keep the body bulk down and give the fly a nice profile. I've been looking around at various online fly shops but cannot find any. I hear that it's hard to find but I was wondering if anybody knows where I can get some, if not any suggestions on an alternative?
thanks, kyle

Kyle:
- First, check with Torrey (nymphmeister) at Housatonic River Outfitters www.dryflies.com.
- Fly shops (not all) sell lead tape. Usually runs about $5.00 for a package.
- If that doesn't work, your next best bet is to go to a golf shop and purchase lead tape.
- In either case, you will need to take an old pair of scissors and cut into strips.
Tricky to cut with scissors. Easy to cut with a pair of light metal shears. You may also cut the strips with a razor blade and straight edge.
If you can't find or make the flat lead, don't despair. Use regular round lead wire. At the point where you tie it in and tie it off, flatten it with a pliers. This will make a nice step down taper at each end.
You can also take 0.010 diameter round lead and flatten it out with a rolling device (x-acto knife body works great).
Jan Siman in Czech Republic sells the stuff you want, but at great expense and shipping. Steve Korbay from Fly-Tying Specialties carries it, but cannot ever stock enough, although he tries really hard. Tell Steve you want to be on the waiting list for the next batch!

Re: Flat Lead Wire
I REALLY like the flat lead that Steve aka. Fly Tying Specialties sells. It is 100 percent lead unlike the spooled lead that we buy at fly shops. It is a Jan Siman product and is imported from Europe.
Try it... you will like it.
