Re: Winter caddis patterns
I use any yellow dubbing. Sometimes I use Yellow Ice Dubbing, Yellow SLF or even Superfine. I also mix up the Ice Dubbing with the other two to give it a little trigger of sorts. I use either a copper, or brown glass bead. The rib is either brown krystal flash or copper. I tie the flies on a size 18 2499spbl.
The main thing is that the imitation has a yellowish body and a barker head. If you do not like beads you can dub the head.
Re: Winter caddis patterns
Thats great thank you if you don't mind one more question for you , do you weight them ? In regards to fishing them are these more of a bottom bouncing pattern or are these a mid way on it way to hatch type pattern . thanks
Re: Winter caddis patterns
I fish mine near the bottom. However I don't see why suspending them in slower water zones wouldn't work as well.
Re: Winter caddis patterns
Bill if you wanna weight them just use a copper bead, or even a tungsten copper bead if you want the maximum weight. For Czech/Euro techniques weighted ones are preferred, for strike indicator nymphing I like to use a Root Beer glass bead and let the split shot take it down, it hangs up a lot less that way. Or just dub the head like Aaron mentioned already. FYI, this color scheme imitates the larva, they are yellow, as are the black caddis larva too- so you are killing two birds with one stone.
Re: Winter caddis patterns
