So far, I have been happy with the "segmentation" derived from Scud back or Magic Shrimp Foil. I think some people stretch the material too tight before segmenting. When you do this, the segments turn out to be quite shallow and invisible. The back should be snug, but not stretched tight. I use 7X mono for the rib.
Please try the new material and give us a comparison here. Thanks.
I agree I feel that the Shrimp Skin and Scud Back work well. I am actually thinking of using Nymph Skin on Stonflies and maybe a few caddis patterns. It is getting into the area of realistic ties but I fish some pressured streams and maybe this stuff will catch me a few more trout. There is only one way to find out. I will try to get pictures of my work but i am not sure if my camera is good enough for such small subject matter.
try some raffiea it workable for nymph backs ,apply tread lock over the back to help toughen it .
some people call it medallion sheeting
Is that actually the same stuff??
I think thats what I meant :P

Just to show you what i am thinking. The flies i woud be tying ar similar to the patterns shown at Fly Tying Specialties!
That is how my caddis come out using the scud back or shrimp foil, but maybe the nymph skin is better. I'll let you know what I think. You should know that many accomplished fly fishermen think that the darker back on a caddis larva is not even necessary! It's probably more important how you fish the fly. You can also just color the back of the dubbing with a brown permanent marker, don't go crazy.
Alan,
So you are tying with the Shrimp Foil and Scud back in a similar fashion? i might have to give that a try. I really just find it a blast to try new materials it get me thru the winter.
