Fished with my buddy Big Fred today, and I would rate the fishing as decent but certainly not fast. He commented that the bites were extremely light, very subtle & hard to detect. And once again, you had to work for every hit. Water temp was about 41 degrees in the afternoon, and it clouded up. AM flow was 680cfs per USGS, but I'd say it was closer to 600cfs in the mid afternoon when I ventured out. Seems like the trout are spread out, some here, some there. Water temps aren't cold or warm enough to concentrate them in any one type of spot. Softer current edges seem to be as good as anywhere at the moment. Faster times are yet to come as the water chills and the trout stack up in the pools and deeper runs.
Fred is a long time no-indicator nympher, so he is loving all this Euro-style weighted nymph stuff, and using it to tweak his rigging. I sold him my 10' #5 Sage XP this Spring, and now he is a complete ten foot rod junkie for nymphing. He also loves the colored sighters & long fluoro tippets, and is finding his catch rates go up as he plays with all the variables this year.
Hooking fish wasn't a big problem for Fred today, but landing them.... well that's another story. If he was a baseball player, he would have been batting .200. I batted 1.000, going 3 for 3, and I think I missed some lite bites, as did Fred.
Here's one he managed to land. It looked close to 17" in the net, but when he held it up it only looked about 14"- I guess that's what happens when you are about 6' 4" and 250 pounds and go to the gym regularly. Here's the brown: http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...mDec208002.jpg
I gave Fred some heavily weighted BH Caddis larva this Spring for a trip to the Beaverkill, and he has since added the use of tungsten beads and liberal use of lead wire to his nymphs, and split shot on his line when necessary. He commented that since he has paid more attention to using enough weight to get down near the bottom he is catching bigger trout. Not surprising, as bigger trout won't move as far to eat as average ones will.
Watch out for Fred in '09, he was already a good nympher and now that he is studying it hard he is getting even better. FYI, this is the first year he ever fished trout past October, and in fact he commented that this was the first trout he ever caught in December. Looks like golf may become a distant second sport choice for Fred next year. ;)

Re: Fish on, fish off...
If I knew my afternoon with Torrey was going to be shared with all maybe I would of been a bit more careful. Loosing a big fish because the knot failed is unexceptable. Glad I was with Torrey and not my father, back in the day he would of sent me back to the truck after that.
Hell today he"d say after forty years of fishing you can't tie a knot, go to the truck. lol
I have learn a lot this year to improve my skills. Having friends like Torrey, Steve and Dave is a big plus. I have met Aaron but not on the river or to talk fishing but I'd be lying if I said I didn't learn anything from him and his web site. Lots of great stuff here.
Well Torrey till next time...you better not lose one fish.

Fred,
Glad to have you here! Now you have to make sure nothing fails! You're going to hear about it on TPO. Do you tie flies yet? Come to HRO on the 13th we will be there tying flies. Even if you want to shoot the s--- stop by. Torrey told me that you are all fired up to fish more.

Re: Fish on, fish off...
Thanks Aaron, I'll try to stop in. Yes started tying again this year. Did it for a short time when I was a kid fishing with my father. Then started again about ten years ago but that didn't last long. This year is different. Like Torrey said there was always other sports that came first so I was a guy that got out twenty times a year.
Last year I got about fifty days in, this year I really got the bug and I am at a hundred and been tying threw out the season. Would love to learn more about tying. Watched many a video this year, yours and others which was a big help.
