Red blood midge & Housie rainbows
A good weekend of fishing on the Housie Lots of nice brown's & rainbows. I fished with egg patern's stone flies and San Juan worms, but the killer fly was the black beadhead blood midge. After fishing for a couple of hour's and getting the occasional fish i swithed to the Blood midge and within the next hour landed 6 rainbows. I just wish I could find that magic fly every time out.
The blood midge was tied from the recipe on this site with a black tungsten beed added size 16 fished with indi.

Dave,
How big were the browns? That midge with the red holygraphic tinsel kills them! Glad you had success with it! I have a ton in my box as well. There are more FOTM's coming. I filmed three of them.

Hi Aaron
One of the brown's was in the 16" range the others were around 14" I cant beleive how firm the rainbows are when you pick them up. its no wonder they fight so good.
Hope youy had a good trip to the SR I will be headed up on friday

Re: Red blood midge & Housie rainbows
Dave,
Thanks for the tip! Good job on the fish. A fancy version of this fly is here:

The red holographic tinsel is not easy to find. The counter wrap with the fine wire will greatly increase the durability of this fly.
Last year at this time, Aaron showed me John Barr's "Pure Midge Larva" and I can tell you that it also works really well.
For both flies, the UTC 70 red thread is simply the best. Nothing glows or give red translucence like that thread.
Isn't it amazing how these simple flies work the best?

Thanks Alan I will give that A try
