Any other converts out there? For the past month, I have been touch dubbing my nymphs and am really happy with the results.
What thread do you like (works the best) for touch dubbing? Perhaps it doesn't matter. I've been trying UTC 70, Danville 6/0 FlyMaster and Unithread 8/0 with Hi Tack wax. I am leaning towards the FlyMaster, but wondering if some other thread works better. Thanks.

Re: Touch Dubbing
What is touch dubbing? Is it to help build the body girth without having to wind a lot of thread? Can you explain?

Re: Touch Dubbing
Touch dubbing is a dubbing method originated by Gary LaFontaine. I learned about it from Loren Williams' excellent fly-tying tutorials. It is a method that quickly produces a sparse, even dubbing noodle. You can produce spiky or smooth dubbed bodies this way.
To touch dub, take your dubbing and make sure it consists of short pieces, 1/4 to 1/2 inch is about right. If the dubbing is packed tightly, you'll want to fluff it up in your coffee grinder first. To touch dub, apply some tacky wax to your thread and make a loose ball with the dubbing in your hand. Simply touch the dubbing to the thread without actually touching the thread (hence the name). The sticky wax should grab a few dubbing fibers, just enough. Spin the bobbin vigorously to tighten the thread and lock in the fibers. Dub the fly. If you want a smoother body, simply smooth the dubbing while you spin the thread. That's it! Happy tying!
