Im looking at getting a new 4wt reel (under $200) any suggestions?
I would get the Ross Rhythm 2.5 or the CLA in a 2.5. I was speaking to the rep this weekend and he was telling me that the CLA now comes in "Realtree" camo! I think I am going to get one of those as well. Also, I used the CLA last summer and I have many good things to say about it. That reel is a great value.
I am sure that these two reels are below the 200 dollar price point.
Aaron, Do you feel as though a large Arbor is necessary for a 4wt rod, Im not entirely sure of what it is, and also do you feel as though the camo reel may be better on smaller, spookie brookie streams?
The CLA is a large arbor but the Rhythm is somewhere in between. I mean its not neccessary but the again the large arbor reel is never really needed for stream trout fishing. Its about preference. About the camo reel I was only mentioning that because I thought the color was unique and I liked it. I would think many other things would spook the fish before the reel would!
Thanks Aaron. I thought the same thing about the camo. Seems like camo and large arbor are the gimmicky things the fly fishing industry has been doing that just doesn't seem to make sense. Guess it sells more gear to people that already have what they need though.
The camo is def useless, but I would highly recommend large arbor reels, it's not nes but I prefer them big time.
I can tell you from fishing with the CLA is a GREAT reel especially in the salt! I have 3 of them. One for the 9,10wts and one on my 5 wt for nymphing. Great drag. Better than the one on the Evolution or the Rythem. Awesome reels as well which I have a few. I believe the drag system in the CLA is very similiar if not the same to the one in the Big Game Canyons. Great reel especially for the price. Aaron, reeltree camo, that is pretty bad ass. That would be cool. However, not necessary.
Thanks guys this helps alot, I'm still learning all this stuff, and having knowledgeable fly guys like you to ask makes it quite a bit easier to get good quality material!
