Flows at the Big T have been decent as of late so took Fathers day hall pass with me to the Big Thompson.
Started around 8:30 am spotted caddis in the bushes...tied on a czech rig with with a polish woven and a lafontaine DSP...got hits consistently on both. Around 10 switched onto wets...the sparsest of sparse spider type flies way outfished my other offernings so I spent from late AM to mid afternoon fishing a caddis hatch with slightly sunken wets - had a blast. The wets I was throwing were at least as effective as dries would have been if not moreso...great day, kinda Aaron Jasper/Davy Wotton textbook kinda day...the weather was gorgeous and some rain came in to finish off the afternoon which if you have been watching the news is sorely needed again out here in CO.

I spent Father's day with a hall pass. Given my choices are somewhat limited until the end of runoff I decided on the Big Thompson. Some of the prettiest rainbows this side of the Continental Divide live here. So back to the story...I was fishing having a ball getting some good results by employing both Euro-nymphing and wet fly techniques...and hopping from one spot to another along the canyon road. Somewhere around 1 pm. I went back to the car for lunch and to "move" . I drive a sedan and pass the rod through the backseat ski hatch and the tip sticks up around the gear shift. Mind you I've had the car since new and 247,650 miles later I still have it...super reliable and still doesnt lose oil between changes so....drive it like you stole it...right??? Anyhow I'm driving up the road and start smelling this epoxy burning smell.. my eyes are fixed on the road and on the river for potential fishing spots...we all know the drill..long story short the tip of my newish Sage One is sticking into the tape player slot(told ya its practically an antique)...its shorting the tape player and melting the the tip off my rod....plus I could have a fire in the works ....pull over and yank the rod out...i broke the already broken/burned melted tip getting it out of the hole....but saved the car...luckily my 12 year old Loomis GLX was packed in the trunk...strung it up and proceeded to land several more nice fish on wets during a caddis hatch...great day...a little exciting...but not exactly the kind of excitement I was hoping for...oh and the GLX is only 9 ft...its tip wont reach the tape deck!

I was fishing the North Fork the other day and there were roughly 5-6 other guys out fishing (spin fishing.) Every single one of them were on the other side of the stream from me. I was casting my nymphs right to the other side of the stream (where they were but upstream of them.) After about 4-5 fish all of these guys started casting over to the other side of the stream. So in essence does it matter what side of the stream you are on if your just going to try to cast to the other side every time? Clearly these guys were not picking up on the fact that they were standing right over the majority of the fish. I also really expected them to pick up on it when they kept getting hung up because the opposite side of the stream was maybe 1.5-2 feet deep. It makes me wonder about how many times when i was fishing that I though "Boy thats where I need to be" when in reality the fish were actually right in front of me.

PLEASE help me decide what the best rod reel combination for me

I will be purchasing a rod to be used strictly for European nymphing. I want the best setup available for this style of fishing as I do not want to upgrade down the road. From what I have read it appears that the Sage ESN is the most commonly recommended pole in the US for this style.

I live in rhode island and fish the blackstone river for much of the spring and early summer. During the warmer months I am forced to look to other river and in the past have fished wood river however it is smaller river with a lot of trees and brush which makes it hard to use European nymhing methods. For this reason, I plan to start fishing larger rivers in CT and MA such as the Farmington river. For the most part I tend to catch trout in the 10-17 inch range with the occasional 18-22 inch fish.

For these rivers is the 10’ 3wt the right size and length?

I would like a large arbor reel for this set up and thought the Hardy Ultralite 4000 DD would be a good choice. It weights 4.83g, has a 3.74 inch diameter. Will this balance the rod properly as I do not want it to be tip heavy?

Any advice people can give me will be appreciated!!!!

Heading up to Maine this weekend. Among other things I hope to fish Upper Dam using my newly acquired euronymphing "skills" (loosely defined) if the construction activity allows.

Looking at the Maine fishing laws and definitions, fly fishing is defined as:"Casting upon water and retrieving in a manner in which the weight of the fly line propels the fly". Well, I will only be casting my leader (thanks for the recipe Aaron), and retrieving slack. Is this legal in Maine?

In the past I would be slinging streamers, but have a hunch bead heads will turn heads (trout) at the Upper Dam!

Forgive me if I am very vague with this question but it is somewhat hard to explain. Yesterday I was on a stream when fish began to rise everywhere. There were no bugs that were clearly coming off that I could see. The takes were very splashy and the fish were coming completely out of the water. My initial assumption was that they are taking Emergers because of the splashing takes (I have been told this is true but I am not sure.) I tried everything I had and not a single take. This stream has very little big activity that is noticeable. If you lift up some rocks all that are noticeable are some caddis and stoneflies. So what would you do in this situation? What do you think they could have been taking? Thanks guys!

Max Bothwell, a research scientist for Environment Canada, who wrote an influential article that linked angler's felt soled boots to dydimo spread has now reversed himself and said that anglers are not responsible.

Here is his original article, On the Boots of Fishermen:

http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/wat/wq/stud...ymo-blooms.pdf

He now believes that dydimo has been in North American waters and that it is a change in water chemistry, specifically lower phosphorus levels that has caused dydimo blooms.

Read the article in the current issue of American Angler, July-August, 2013, pp 8-9.

"'I no longer believe the problem is North American streams is the result of it (dydimo) being moved around.' …. Scientists are now convinced that dydimo lives in many streams, but blooms only when the water has far less than the normal amount of phosphorus…… The most damaging dydimo episode in the US seems to have been on Rapid Creek in South dakota, where a six-mile bloom dramatically impacted a blue ribbon brown trout fishery. In 2007 and 2008, Bothwell and other scientists added phosphorus to sections of Rapid Creek. Sure enough, the dydimo mats shrank."

I'm totally new to this forum and just wanted to say hi to everyone! The forum looks fantastic! So many lovely shots of big, bonnie troot!!

I'm a 100% scotsman living in Austria. I do go home though for sometimes as the trout fishing over here isn't nearly as good (or as available) as that back home.

I operate a website with lots of lovely fishing photos and fly tying tips from Scotland called:
Get in touch if you want and have a great season wherever your fly may find water,
