Altitude adustment

I am fishing the Gunnison area in Colorado. The altitude is around 8000 feet which is a big change for this New Englander. My stamina is improving every day but it is an adjustment. I am also learning about fast currents and loose rocks the hard way. I thought I was a pretty good wader until I got here . The water is deceptive in speed and depth. I have decided not to cross rivers if the water is above my knees. The scenery is great and the fishing is also. I took 15 fish in three hours this morning . The largest is the 18 to 19 inch range. I have had to adjust my EU fishing quite a bit to accommodate the current speed . I am using heavy Czech nymphs, Dronestones , and Crane fly larvae . All of the aforementioned patterns tied very heavy. I also lengthened line from the sighter to the first fly to nine feet. This allows my presentations to drift down deep in heavy current. I am finding a lot of fish right on the edge of the shelves . The trick seems to be to place the fly upstream at the correct angle to get the best presentation. The currents are confusing and it has taken me sometime to figure it out but I get better at it each day.

I moved out here about 5 years ago...it takes a few months to really acclimate to the altitude. I live at about 6000 feet and heading up to 8 or 10,000 is a real change as well. Amazing what your body will tell you if you let it...anyhow, glad you are having good fishing. The Gunny is one of the best yet relatively under fished compared to others. One thing I've noticed out here and it probably has to do with the geology/topography around Colorado...is that fish in many rivers hold tight to the banks...I could name 10 rivers and its true in all of them. The only river that doesnt seem to have this characteristic is the South Platte below Cheeseman. Anyhow have a great time...its a great time to fish out here.

Not quite off topic, but part of the numbers geek in me....

If your a fan of baseball, a professor wrote a couple of pieces awhile back, theorizing that Coors field should be a hitters field, because the air density is about 10% less, leading to more home runs. So even baseball has to adjust...

i only live at about 4000 feet but even that was quite an adjustment from around 2000; i was heaving hard in the gym for the first couple months. Looks like pretty typical high desert water. Caution, water in front of you is faster than it appears.

Love that river and area. I used to live in Creede and can relate to the change in altitude. If you want a change in scenery, check out the Rio Grande - amazing through Creede. The Box Canyon is my favorite piece of water on the planet and fishes GREAT ths time of year. Should have it all but to yourselves after the fire scare. Have fun!

I am fishing the river west of Gunnison above the Mesa reservoir. I have caught some fish tight to the bank but I am doing the best fishing shelves. The best spots seem to be where the water drops off abruptly but not particularly deep . I have had some luck probing the seams . My biggest struggle surprise!!! surprise!!! is finding the right weight nymph for the seam . I am either to light or to heavy. I think I am looking for a weight that will go deep but not hit the bottom at the end of the drift.

have you thought about trying a bounce rig? put the weight on point and run 2 droppers up above. I find its a pretty quick way to get them in the zone fast.

On one of the sections between Gunnison, and the "Mesa" Reservoir is this bridge. I fish that area about ten times a year.

If you get bored. Try some large Soft Hackles (12-10) in the riffles. I have had some 100 fish days doing that. Weighted and not weighted. I tend to do best with a dead drift in that area.

If you get a chance, head down to the East Portal. Cross and fish below the roller dam. I think you will be surprised at how well you will do nymphing there. Just suggestions.

Sorry no pictures. It was a late afternoon hurry-and-already-tired session after bicycling at 9,000'. The Gunnison Almont campground section gets pounded by floaters launching a quarter mile up, also by campers and other wadefishers at the campground. Still, it always seems to give up fish. In an hour and a half I had 12 on, landed 8, biggest measured 16", a bigger one pulled off - all the bigger fish rainbows this time - unusual.

1482 This was the fly. Size 16 TMC scud hook with 7/64" silver tung bead. Ice Dub UV Lt Olive with med copper wire under and over. Dead drift and lift at the end as well as I could arrange. Could I have done as well or better another way with another fly? Maybe someone knows. If DUBBN reads this he probably thinks I'm blind to other flies and presentations.

I fish the Arkansas and Gunnison most, and the Eagle, and the Rio Grande especially near Creede, and agree with others who say that fish in these rivers, especially browns, are often at the banks even in clean water on bright days. However, the last few times I fished the Arkansas and Gunnison there seemed to be more fish in 6"-2' riffly water in the center of the river. Maybe float fishers underfish such water as they position to cast to deeper banks, and wadefishers don't see it as fishy as they go up or down? I, too, used to ignore shallow riffles in the middle of these rivers.

Lastly, in a DavyW post somewhere, he suggested fishing dead drift, with or without a lift, rather than a (classic?) swing starting from across. I second this. I have read that the abundant caddis species have little ability to swim laterally, but drift down current as part of simple drift or emergence, also when some dive to the bottom to lay eggs and try to swim back up. I have caught fish on rapid cross current swings, and also while walking upstream trailing the fly behind, but I have not been able to make a technique out of either nearly as effective as dead drift with or without a lift.

I would love to know how others do best on these rivers.

It seems that at certain times of year the fish migrate away from the edges, this is one of those times at least as far as the Arkansas is concerned. I fished hard yesterday and had great results on caddis emergers dropped about 18-12" from a large Stimmie. The Stimmie is still getting fish and a good number but the LaFontaine Emergent Sparkle Pupa in a #14-16 and a soft hackle in the same sizes worked wonders. During an apparent emergence I was very successful in getting takes on the emerger after I moved it an inch or so. The best colors were hare's ear and tan on the emergent pupa.
Early in the day the fish were more tight to the banks, as the sun came into the canyon, the fish moved into more "typical" holding lanes.
All in all I must have taken a couple dozen, many in the 14-16 range one bow was maybe 18. This is a banner time on the Arkansas and I would imagine it will be stellar through the end of September at the very least.

I second heading to the east portal. Much more nymph friendly water. Spent 3 threes days camping there last year. Truly amazing scenery and fantastic fishing. Check out the big swirl pool below the roller dam for early morning sippers.:rolleyes:

Fished with a friend a couple stretches some below Salida yesterday. Fished from 9AM to 3PM and saw and sometimes stepped on lots of trout, some big, tight against the banks in inches of water. Bright day, no shade. What were they doing there? Not rising and not taking the various wets we tried.

We finally caught dozens of fish, some 14"-17", mostly from just two small spots: a 10m squared riffle off a shelf where all they would take off our multi fly rigs was a size 16-18 something like a Baetis, and a rock garden inaccessable to floaters and most waders where they took wet caddis and Baetis immitations equally.

We saw a rare midge or tiny mayfly in the air and that was it for insect activity.

We both fish this river frequently, and concluded it was an odd ball day. Fishing.

That would not be unusual for the spring...normally pre-runoff I find fish (some very large) so close to the banks in inches of water its crazy. Last weekend...it seemed to get normal...however early in the day there were more fish in tight and later as the sun got to the water they definitely dispersed into "normal" places that you would fish in most rivers. How far down from Salida did you go- Vallie Bridge?..I've been spending a lot of time in the canyon from Vallie Bridge on down...and also quite a bit of time below Hayden Meadows...but really mostly in the canyon...Pretty much everywhere I have been this season has been very very good...talking to the guys at both Ark Anglers and Royal Gorge...they are pretty much on the same page-one of the best years ever.

Sherp, I, and Greg Mihalik who lives a little north of Salida, fished wading up from the Rincon rec site (between Howard and Swissvale) from about 9 to noon, then from a half mile below the CR101/Hwy50 junction up to that junction between about noon and 3. We most often fish various other sections with good luck, too. We thought it interesting that all day on this bright day there were so many fish to be found shallow along the banks - but not caught by us.

I have lived in Canon City three years, and the previous two seasons were so good along the Canon City river walk, with low, clear water except during the snowmelt runoff, that I rarely fished up the canyon. This season has been different with the burn in the Royal Gorge area and with real monsoon rains keeping town water unfishably muddy. Greg would have to drive past so much good water to fish the lower canyon that I don't think he has bothered. We are recently-met friends and have been fishing his water while my water is mudded out. I am willing to believe that many spots in the low canyon fish well at this low water time of year. Regarding where the fish are now, every time I think I have a firm grip on that, those slippery fish slip to somewhere else.

Nice that there is not much altitude adjustment needed in the low canyon. Call me if you want: 619 (yes, 619) 990 9333.
