Lower than 50 cubic feet per second
These are low summer flows. The creek is still
fishable. Be aware that these are wild trout and they become even
spookier at this level. I have also found that weeds can be a
problem at this flow, especially in the summer months. You can have
great technical dry fly fishing during these periods of low flow.
During periods of lower water I like to fish Spring Creek closer to
the town of
50-100 cubic feet per second
These are still low flows. The fish can still be spooky. Once the flows get closer to 100 cfs. the fishing becomes awesome. This river is chocked with wild brown trout. I have had many days where I have caught in excess of 100 trout on this stream. When the flows get closer to 100 cfs. That is when it really shines. Dry fly fishing can be spectacular at these flows. I have been there during hatches in the lower water and have seen literally thousands of trout rising.
100-150 cubic feet per second
Great flows for nymph fishing. These are the type of flows that I look for to have a rack them up day. The water is higher and stained and the fish do not spook very easily. This is the flow where I have had my greatest success. You can still find great dry fly fishing in some of the slower pools.
150-200 cubic feet per second
These are still great nymph fishing flows. You can find fish everywhere. The wading is still fairly east at these flows. You can use larger cress bug and crane fly larva patterns. Egg flies can also be productive during periods of high water. These are also the conditions that you might want to try streamers in. You might be able to lure out one of those 20” plus brown trout that seem non-existent when the water is lower.
200+ cubic Feet per second
This is high water for Spring Creek. You can still catch fish but you are limited to larger nymphs and streamers fished close to the banks. The wading can be tricky so be careful in the faster currents.
