Blood Midge

Tied by Rich Strolis
Hook: 2488H Size 16-24
Thread: UTC 70 Denier Red
Body: Medium Red Holographic Flash
Bio: Red midge larva are prevalent in most river systems and
especially in tail waters and spring creeks. Although available all
year round, they can be a deadly weapon in the winter and should
have a place in all winter fly boxes. A size 18 is a standard size,
but smaller and larger sizes can save the day. On any kick sample I
have taken on any time during the year on the Farmington, red midge
larva are usually always present, just some food for thought.
Instructions: (See Below) Start your thread just
behind the eye, make about 10 turns and do an overhand knot to lock
in the thread.
Grab a piece of medium holographic red flash, usually comes on a
spool but flashabou will work, I personally like the spooled type by
Wapsi tie it in and wrap over the flash into the bend then advance
the thread just behind the eye and thrown in a half hitch knot.
wrap the flash up to the eye making sure not to leave any gaps in
between wraps, lock in the flash and make a neat thread head about
1/4 the length of the hook shank. Whip finish, cement and done....a
one minute easy tie that works really well. Enjoy.
Fish it as a dropper in a two fly nymph rig.
